‘I am Svetlana and I came to Poland with my family in 2022, my two daughters and three grandchildren. Their husbands stayed in Kyiv to fight for our country. The journey to Poland was dangerous and we stayed for five days in the basement of an old building. The decision was not easy. Leaving your homeland breaks your heart. We need to build our lives here now…we have to learn Polish to talk with other people and to be able to find a job. For children, this is not difficult, but for me, at the age of 60, it is hard. Here we have some other friends from Ukraine, but we also want to be friends with the local people.’
